A Call to Unity and Strength this Purim
1 March 2026
12 Adar 5786
Dear Members of the Australian Jewish Community,

In these days of uncertainty and tension, as we witness the formidable strength and courage of the Israel Defence Forces and the steadfast support of the United States, as well as other allies including the PM of Australia, we must pause and reflect on a deeper truth that our history consistently teaches us.

In the Purim narrative, the Jewish people were saved not through military might alone, nor through political manoeuvring alone. Rather, behind the natural chain of events stood open Divine Providence. The Megillah reveals that what appears political is, in truth, miraculous. What appears strategic is, in essence, spiritual.

Today as well, while we are grateful for the prowess of the IDF and the assistance of powerful nations, we must recognize that the true protection of the Jewish people comes from the Guardian of Israel. The miracles may wear the garments of diplomacy and defence systems, but their source is Above.
The Megillah teaches that the response to threats against the Jewish people is not only practical vigilance, but spiritual mobilization. When Queen Esther faced annihilation, she did not begin with strategy. She declared: “Go, gather all the Jews.” Unity preceded victory.

In our current climate, with missiles launched against our brethren in Eretz Yisrael and with legitimate concerns about hostile elements and sleeper cells seeking harm to Jews worldwide, our strength must be both physical and spiritual. The most powerful shield of the Jewish people has always been our unity and our Mitzvot.

Therefore, we call upon every Jewish man, woman, and child across Australia:
Let us gather together this Purim night in every synagogue, every community centre, every place of Jewish gathering, to hear the Megillah read publicly.
Let us increase in the Mitzvot of Purim - Mishloach Manos, Matanos La’Evyonim, and festive rejoicing.

Let us ensure that no Jew is alone.

When Jews stand together, Heaven responds in kind.

May our gathering this Purim bring protection from all threats visible and hidden, from missiles afar and from those who seek to harm us from within. May it bring revealed miracles, as in the days of Mordechai and Esther.
And may we merit the ultimate and complete redemption, speedily in our days.

With blessings for strength, unity, and joy,
